Life's a Beach

It's chilly & overcast today in Palm Beach.

That means one thing...a great opportunity to take your hound to the beach.

Good Morning 2012!

Neal & Cruce celebrating the New Year.

I'm sitting here watching the golf carts zip by the window.

Cruce is sprawled out in front of the patio, recuperating from our 33 hour drive to Florida. Sound asleep, paws twitching. There's no doubt that he's dreaming of the squirrel that taunted him on his morning walk and all of the new smells that he's encountered. Every once and awhile, he lets out a sigh of contentment.

Yes, life is good.

In Palm Beach, its 80 degrees. Not much like the Eastern Canadian weather that we left behind on Monday.

Here's to 2012! A new year filled with opportunities.

Where will the next 12 months take us? I'm not sure. But, I bet it will be an adventure.

Twenty-Five Hours Today

Deep thoughts with Cruce...

A Greyhound math problem.

If the clock went back last night, & I get to sleep 25 hours today, instead of 24, & I can count x number of sheep per hour, how many extra sheep do I get to count today?

Nostalgia

Sophie & Cruce (with their bald bums): Our original Greyhound Security System.

I forgot how dark his face was when we first got him.

The first & last time that we ever saw Cruce lay in this famous Greyhound pose.

Patience is not a trait that Cruce possesses.

I was reading the posts from Tales & Tails, and Greyhound Gardens this morning, and it made me feel like taking a trip down memory lane.

Scanning through the early photos of Cruce makes me laugh. All of the pictures above were taken within the first few months of him being adopted.

He has always been eccentric, & goofy. Definitely an original.

15 Minutes of Fame & Miss Nellie Auction

Quirky Cruce by Kellie Oliphant-Burns of Doodle Dog Paintings

Cruce has been given an additional 15 minutes of fame. I say additional because, of our four hounds, Cruce-ster Roo-ster was the rockstar of our ex-racers. He ran over 100 races (placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in half of them), came in 1st in several of his Stakes & was a Derby finalist.

This time around, he makes an appearance at the Miss Nellie Auction benefitting the OSU Greyhound Health & Wellness Program.

Kellie Oliphant-Burns of Doodle Dog Paintings donated a print of an original that we commissioned from her. I admit, I'm a "little" biased, but I think that the painting is gorgeous.

Quirky Cruce has already had several bids, so far raising $96.00 for the OSU Greyhound Health & Wellness Program. I love that Kellie chose to donate this print, because Cruce has bone cancer. The GHWP works diligently to help dogs like Cruce overcome this horrible disease.

If you haven't visited the auction yet, you really should. There's something for everyone & every hound. And the proceeds go to a great cause.

The auction closes October 31st at 10 PM Eastern.

Weird

Cruce showing off his Yogurt Nose

Life has been very weird for us lately. We're used to having a house full of hounds. A ratio of 1:1 hands to hounds. Currently, we only have Cruce. Thank doG for him. He's being a trooper. This is the first time in his life that he has been an only hound. At the track, he would have had at least 20 other greyhounds around him. There were 10 dogs with him on the drive from the track to his new life. In in his home, he was part of a pack of 4. To say that he is lonely would be an understatement.

Friends came over to visit last night with their greyhound. Cruce could not contain himself when he saw Indie in the car. A total look of glee came across his face, and he drug my husband down the street to chase them (we were out for a walk when they came by).

We've discussed the possibility of getting another greyhound. However, we can't seem to make a decision. I admire the courage of people who adopt again soon after losing a dog. It's a wonderful way to honour the memory of the companion that you've lost. But we aren't quite there yet. A state of limbo would be the best way to describe it. Not having a dog is unimaginable. Having a dog that isn't one we've already had is also unimaginable.

I know that someday we'll be ready again. It just seems a long way off.

Mornings

Cruce - nose tucked, ears up

"Do not disturb. Saturday a.m. in progress."

Tutu - giving me the evil eye

"I'm not giving up the couch. I've worked hard to get here."

My husband is in charge of the nightly "turn down service" for the dogs. Out to the dog run, mats fluffed, dogs covered up, good-night ear scritches & treats given.

Lately however, when I get up in the morning, this is what I see (note above photos).

Cruce is on his mat. Tutu is on the couch. At first, it was one cushion (1/3 of the couch). Then it was half the couch. Now it is the full couch plus one pillow. And a blanket. I'm sure that she is Eloise reincarnated. This hound thinks that she's living at the plaza.
