Antics

Tutu, Colby, & Sophie

It's been six months since Tutu left us. Today would have been her 10th birthday.

This picture cracks me up.

Tutu & Sophie acting as Colby's bookend.

Tutu and Sophie, the divas, had their spots on the couch. Always nestled into the corner. There was an understanding between them. It's as if an imaginary line was drawn down the middle.

Colby on the other hand, was a different story all together. If there was a space anywhere on the couch, he had to occupy it. End cushion, middle cushion, even the arm. He always managed to squeeze his 80 pound body in. It didn't matter if it was 2 inches or 2 feet.

I miss their antics.

The Story of Tutu

Sometimes out of nowhere, life gives you a little pick me up when you need it most.

A few months ago we lost Tutu. Her leaving us was a complete shock. It's been hard to deal with to say the least. We lost 3 of our hounds in thirteen months and our remaining grey was diagnosed with bone cancer in the spring.

Each day has its ups & down. And not necessarily in that order. There are days that are more up than down. Others seem like they are just mostly down.

One particular day this week started out poorly. I woke up from a dream in which I was outside playing with the dogs. The knot that I got in the pit of my stomach when I realized only Cruce remains with us, can't be described.

I proceeded downstairs to fill one dish with food. Change the water for one dog. Let one hound out to do doggie business. Bring one hound back in and fluff the bedding for one dog.

It sucks to only have one left with us. Goodness knows how long he will be here. I miss having a house full of greyhounds. Cruce does too. This is the first time in his life that he has been an only dog.

On my way to work, I stopped into the post office.

"Do you still have greyhounds?" asks the cheery woman behind the counter.

I know that I am looking at her with a puzzled look on my face. I'm trying to recognize her. The name tag that she's wearing says, "Elizabeth S".

"Yes, we have one."

Elizabeth S. Elizabeth S. Where do I know her from?

"You and your husband had four of them at one time didn't you?"

"Yes, unfortunately, we lost 3 of them within the last year"

"What a sin. Beautiful dogs. I have a greyhound."

"Really? When did you adopt?"

"Three years ago. It was shortly after I met you and your husband at a greyhound fundraiser. You had Tutu with you. The entire time that I was talking with you, she was glued to me while I pet her. I thought that she was so sweet. You joked that she loved people and would go home with anyone. Everytime that I talk to new people about greyhounds, I always tell the story of Tutu and how she convinced me to get a greyhound."

"Tutu would be so proud of herself! Say "hi" to your hound for me" I say as I turn to leave.

I smile to myself all the way to work.

Losing something that you love is never easy. But knowing that my dogs have helped other greys find homes and have a special place in someone else's memory makes it a little easier.

Thank you Elizabeth S.

I have to second that.

Tutube

I love greyhound noses. Most of the pictures that I take of them, all seem to be of their profile. Tutu especially. She's pure white, except for some ticking that appears in the Spring & Summer (We call it her Spring-O-Meter. Normally, when the spots start coming out, we know that Spring is near.) Her colouring (or lack thereof) makes the tip of her nose stand out all the better. Doesn't it remind you of a liquorice jujube (gumdrop)?

Chasing the Sun

I've been trying to get a beach picture of Tutu for the Retired from Racing, not from Life Art Book Project. She's the only houndie of our four, that does not have the quintessential summer shot. Let me rephrase that, she's the only one that does not have a good beach photo.

She's pure white & hates the heat. So, the fall weather that we've been having is perfect for her. Everytime that my husband and I are both available to take the hounds, the weather doesn't cooperate. Today the sun is out, but it would be freezing at the beach. Normally, when we are both home, it's raining. Or when we are able to leave it's mid day. I'm an amateur photographer. Have fun taking pictures of a bright white dog when the sun is at it's highest. (I'm sure those of you with proper training could figure it out.)

Hopefully, sometime within the next week, the weather will warm up, it will be sunny & husband & I will both have time to pack up the hounds & go on a mini road trip.

Mornings

Cruce - nose tucked, ears up

"Do not disturb. Saturday a.m. in progress."

Tutu - giving me the evil eye

"I'm not giving up the couch. I've worked hard to get here."

My husband is in charge of the nightly "turn down service" for the dogs. Out to the dog run, mats fluffed, dogs covered up, good-night ear scritches & treats given.

Lately however, when I get up in the morning, this is what I see (note above photos).

Cruce is on his mat. Tutu is on the couch. At first, it was one cushion (1/3 of the couch). Then it was half the couch. Now it is the full couch plus one pillow. And a blanket. I'm sure that she is Eloise reincarnated. This hound thinks that she's living at the plaza.
